At a surface level, of course we’re excited about Kathryn Bigelow’s wins for Best Director and Best Picture at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards on Sunday.  After 81 years, more than 400 total nominees and only three other nominations for women, finally seeing a woman at the podium was the highlight of the three hour show.

Bold Girls Finish First

Kaiser Permanente's Community Benefit at Work for Girls Inc.

For the past five years, Kaiser Permanente has helped to sustain the work and mission of Girls Inc. of Alameda County, through grant funding and event sponsorship. Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit grant support benefits Girls Inc.’s obesity prevention work in our WOW! program and our pregnancy prevention efforts through the HEART (Helping Everyone Achieve Respect Together) program. As a result of Kaiser Permanente’s generous support, girls learn more about health and sexuality topics, which empower our participants to make healthier choices.  Read more »

Sexting – What every girl and parent should know

Parents may be shocked to learn that a recent survey* showed 21% of teen girls have sent or posted nude or semi-nude images of themselves via text messages on their cell phone—this is called “sexting”. Also, there have been some high profile legal cases in which teens have been charged with child pornography for sexting. And with teen pregnancy on the rise again, there is cause for significant concern.  Read more »
