Our Mission
The mission of Girls Inc. of Alameda County is inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold
Who We Are

Girls Incorporated of Alameda County is an affiliate of the national Girls Incorporated, the nation's leading voice for girls.

Girls Incorporated of Alameda County has provided programs and real-life options to girls in our community for over 45 years. Today, we offer year-round academic enrichment and skill-building programs, as well as counseling services.

In 2006, Girls Incorporated was awarded the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence. The seal is awarded to members that have, upon rigorous independent review, been able to certify, document, and demonstrate on an annual basis that they meet the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness, and cost effectiveness. Of the 1,000,000 charities operating in the United States today, it is estimated that fewer than 50,000, or 5 percent, meet or exceed these standards and fewer than 2,000 have been awarded this Seal.

What We Do

Girls Inc. programming is based on the belief that young women and girls are inherently important and benefit from programs designed to address their particular needs. Rather than focusing on the problems young women and girls face, Girls Inc. takes an asset-based approach, emphasizing girls' strengths and capabilities, building competencies, and enabling girls to meet the challenges they face.

Girls Inc. supports and incorporates girls' ideas, perspectives, and voices throughout program implementation, development, and evaluation. This youth-centered approach engages girls as problem-solvers, promotes their development, and increases their opportunity to form supportive relationships.

Guided by our vision of empowered girls and an equitable society, Girls Inc. has created strong partnerships with local community organizations, schools, government, and health and juvenile justice representatives to accomplish its mission.

Girls Inc. offers powerful solutions to the most pressing issues facing girls today before those issues become problems. Our programs include:

  • Literacy
  • Science and Math
  • Sports, Health and Fitness
  • Computers and Technology
  • Leadership, Community and Culture
  • College and Career Preparation
  • Health and Sexuality
  • Personal Growth
  • Mental Health Services
  • Advocacy

Who We Serve
Each year Girls Inc. serves more than 7,000 youth and their families through programs offered at over 40 schools and community sites in Alameda County. Girls Inc. continues to reach out to girls whose needs are greatest:

  • Nearly 30% of girls served are from families earning less than $35,000 annually.
  • Over 85% are families of color.
  • 52% represent single parent families, mostly headed by women
