Alameda County nominates Gap Inc. for the California Governor and First Lady's Medals for Service Award Nomination

Gap Inc. is a trailblazer in the field of corporate social responsibility. Through a variety of initiatives, Gap Inc. successfully leverages the time and talents of more than 134,000 employees, who are engaged as community leaders, organizing company-sponsored service events and acting as ambassadors for the company’s work in the community. Through the efforts of these community leaders and the commitment of all their employees, Gap Inc. makes significant daily contributions to its’ communities. The organizational culture supports and encourages volunteerism through a structured Employee Engagement Program.

Through their community engagement, Gap identified the real needs for Girls Inc. and created programs and opportunities to meet those needs.  The initiative offered was thoughtfully planned and of the highest quality, providing real value for our organization. As a result, our staff and girls have greatly benefited from their contribution. Volunteers have spent countless hours assisting in annual events or conducting trainings which strengthen staff leadership skills. Gap Inc. has enhanced our abilities to support the “whole girl,” from reading with a girl to help increase her literacy skills, to being available for weekly tutoring sessions.

Gap Inc.’s philanthropic focus is on underserved youth in the developed worlds and women in the developing world, as the company sees the greatest potential to have an impact in these areas. As a large international employer of young people, Gap Inc. understands youth culture and the challenges that young people from underserved communities face in terms of job exposure, access and training. The company’s goal is to support organizations that keep youth engaged in their education and help them better prepare for adulthood and careers. Gap Inc. also supports women’s issues, as women represent over 70 percent its’ employees, and have an influential role throughout Gap Inc.’s management and culture.

We at Girls Inc. of Alameda County are pleased to have such a strong relationship with Gap Inc.. Through their hands-on approach, our girls experience volunteers that are engaging, diverse in knowledge, and dedicated to our youth developmental approach.  In the spirit of National Volunteer Week, Girls Inc. wanted to send a public thank you to every staff member at Gap Inc., who has advocated for change through sharing their time with Girls Inc. of Alameda County!
