Get Things Done for America and Girls Inc. of Alameda County

Girls Inc. of Alameda County is proud to honor our outstanding AmeriCorps members during National AmeriCorps Week, May 8th-May 15th.

AmeriCorps is a national program that gives individuals the chance to devote themselves to an entire year of full time community service.  All AmeriCorps members take a pledge that they will “get things done for America” by doing the hands-on, direct service work of non-profits around the nation.  At Girls Inc. of Alameda County, our AmeriCorps members “get things done for America” by serving as Group Leaders in our Kindergarten through 5th grade after school programs, as well as by recruiting hundreds of volunteers to serve our girls and their families.

Since it was launched for the 2007-2008 school year, the AmeriCorps Program at Girls Inc. has enabled us to enrich our services to girls and their families in so many ways.  For example, because AmeriCorps members serve over 40 hours a week, we are able to provide them with an ongoing structured training program to strengthen their youth development skills.  They are also able to meet regularly with staff from our Pathways Counseling Center to consult with them about how to address the social and emotional challenges of the girls and families they serve.  Finally, in addition to providing Girls Inc. after school programs, during the school day our AmeriCorps members work with struggling students one on one and in small groups.  These regular youth development trainings, consultations with Pathways staff, and school day tutoring have all significantly enriched the experiences of the girls and families we serve.

The greatest benefit of our AmeriCorps Program is the outstanding people that it has brought to Girls Inc. of Alameda County.  We have learned over these past few years that people who choose to serve in AmeriCorps are driven, committed individuals who have a true passion for making a difference in the world.  We are consistently amazed and inspired by our AmeriCorps members because of the quality of their work and their unwavering dedication to the people we serve.

For all of these reasons and more, Girls Inc. of Alameda County is enthusiastically celebrating this year’s National AmeriCorps Week and looking forward to many more in the future.  To our AmeriCorps members: thank you for your amazing commitment to service and to the mission of Girls Incorporated by inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold!
