| AmeriCorps AmeriCorps
is a network of local, state, and national service programs that
connects more than 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service
to meet our country's critical needs in education, public safety,
health, and the environment. Since 1994, more than 400,000 men
and women have provided needed assistance to millions of Americans
across the nation through their AmeriCorps service.
AmeriCorps is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent
resident aliens age 17 and older. Members serve full or part time
over a 10- to 12-month period. AmeriCorps members are considered
volunteers, and receive a modest living stipend during their term
of service. After successful completion of service, members receive
an education award that can pay back qualified student loans or
be used for future education costs.

children and youth (primarily girls) in after-school programs
in Oakland and San Leandro. We are addressing the need for improved
academic performance, quality adult contact, and social-emotional
