Volunteer Opportunities
Girls Incorporated of Alameda County is looking for volunteers for a wide variety of opportunities. We are seeking people for on-going commitments, short-term projects, and internships.

View the current and on-going volunteer opportunities and, then fill out the Volunteer Application Form and click on the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page. Once received, the Volunteer Manager will contact you within one week.


Be an All STAR

All STARS is Girls Inc.’s newest program for middle school girls. All STARS is an intensive after-school program that takes place at one middle school in San Leandro and two schools in Oakland. The All STAR girls are smart, inquisitive and looking for adult role-models! Volunteers for All STARS commit to one afternoon a week during after-school hours (3-6PM). Volunteers will help with homework and academic enrichment activities, as well as technology, sports and nutrition activities. Volunteers must be 18 years or older and enjoy working with girls to spark curiosity and creativity. A sense of humor is a must! Please contact me for information about our next volunteer training session.


GIRLStart: Teach a Girl to Read

Weekdays in San Leandro and Oakland: 3:15 – 5:15pm (approx.)

Be a Literacy Volunteer at GIRLStart: Two hours per week during the school year. GIRLStart, an intensive after-school literacy program, is seeking volunteer tutors to work with kindergarten through 3rd grade girls. Previous experience is not necessary. A love for reading and for children is all that is required. GIRLStart participants have been referred to us by their teacher because they read below grade level… they need your support! GIRLStart is offered at four locations: Wilson School in San Leandro, plus Lockwood, Parker and Think College, now ICS, in Oakland. All volunteers must attend a 3 -hour training session and commit to participate in the program one day a week for at least four months. New volunteer trainings are offered monthly.


Volunteer with the WOW! program
Weekdays in San Leandro and Oakland: 3:15 – 5:15pm (approx.)

WOW! is an intensive after-school and summer program for 4th and 5th grade girls. WOW! is designed to further the educational enrichment activities, sports, health, leadership and relationship skill building initiated through the GIRLStart program. If you love sports, fitness, health and kids, come spend one day a week for two hours (3:15 – 5:15pm) helping girls with sports, homework, and other activities. WOW! volunteers must attend one 3- hour training session, and commit to participate in the program one day a week for at least four months.


Help Plan Women of Taste: Our Annual Fundraiser!

Women of Taste is Girls Inc.’s signature annual fundraising event. You can get involved in planning this magical event by being part of the steering committee. We are looking for volunteers to join the following committees: chefs, sponsorship, silent auction, PR, logistics, volunteers, décor, and beverages. The annual Women of Taste event will be held in September at the Oakland Museum. Help us make this event better than ever. All meetings take place in the evening and much of the work can be done by phone or email from your home or work. Steering committee meetings will start in February.

Career Speakers needed

Latinas Y Que is a Girls Inc. leadership program serving Latina high school girls. We are seeking Latina women in various careers to come speak to the girls about your career, educational background and answer questions from the girls.


Translator(s) Needed (Spanish)

We are looking for one or more volunteers to translate documents and forms from English to Spanish. This can be done from your home or office and sent electronically.


S.M.A.R.T. Volunteer
Description:
Operation S.M.A.R.T. (Science, Math and Relevant Technology) is an after-school enrichment program for elementary and middle school girls. Spend one afternoon a week working with girls on hands-on science and math projects. Spark creativity and curiosity in girls, and encourage them to succeed in science and math!
Time: Varies, depending on site.
Days: Monday through Friday.
Commitment: Volunteers must commit to coming in one afternoon a week, for at least one session.

School Year Program Intern
Description:
Program internships vary, depending on the needs of our instructors. During the school year we utilize program interns to co-facilitate group meetings and workshops, for field trips, and for general administrative support.
Time: Vary.
Days: Monday through Friday.
Commitment: Length of commitment and intern schedules vary.


 



Other Volunteer Opportunities:

Administrative Support
We always have a variety of administrative tasks and projects that need to be done. Projects can include: basic filing and organizing, helping with mailings, helping to solicit donations in our areas of need, data-entry and database management, needs assessment research, etc. Available times are between 9:00am and 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.

Pen Pals
Write letters to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade girls in our GIRLStart literacy program. A great, creative way to connect with girls by mail!

Fitness Teacher
Teach one or more sessions of dance, kickboxing, yoga or a similar activity for girls in our fitness programs.

Event Volunteer
Assist with various programs and agency events.

We realize that many of our opportunities are during a common work day, but you can still help! Girls Incorporated of Alameda County has periodic "one-time" events for volunteers. The volunteer update will provide information about these opportunities. Some short-term projects include:

  • Doing an interactive Career Presentation for girls in our programs.
  • Teach a fun, hands-on class in your area of expertise to girls at the Center.
  • Help with event preparation during organized work nights.
