Girls Inc. Program Gives Empowered Support to Families

November 13, 2009

The Family Strengthening Awards honor the people and programs that contribute to improving  the prospects of children and families living in tough neighborhoods everyday. Each year, the Annie E. Casey Foundation provides grants to national organizations whose local affiliates are working directly with families in their communities.

This year, Girls Inc. of Alameda County was recognized for the F.A.C.E.S. (Families Achieve Community through Empowered Support) program by the Girls Inc national headquarters. It was noted as an outstanding program that works to give children what they need most: strong, capable and economically successful families. Going into its 2nd year, this program intentionally responds to the varied needs of the families it serves. F.A.C.E.S. focuses on improving the economic prospects of working men and women and create the services and networks of support that families need to realize their aspirations for themselves and their children.

Through English classes, financial literacy workshops and “nutrition on a budget” workshops, Girls Inc. of Alameda  helps families achieve greater economic self-sufficiency. Families also have access to case management, holiday assistance programs and bilingual mental health services. To help parents build social support networks and bond with other families, the program hosts at least two social nights during the year. Parents also participate in workshops on fitness and puberty and hygiene that help improve communication skills between parents and daughters.
