National Day of Service

September 7, 2009

On September 11, 2009, over 200 children will assist 50 volunteers from Girls Incorporated of Alameda County to participate in a Day of Service that focuses on creating lasting change in the community and encouraging girls to recognize the value of volunteerism.

Girls Inc. of Alameda County  is one of forty Girls Inc. organizations across the United States to hold a youth-led United We Serve Day of Service in 2009.  Girls Inc. organizations worked with the girls they serve to choose and put into action projects to address the needs of their own communities, including city, beach, and park beautification efforts, a nonviolence communication campaign, urban farming, and local environmental awareness.

“We are pleased to participate in this important event and provide our girls with the opportunity to experience the value of volunteering firsthand, to enrich their communities,” commented Linda Boessenecker, CEO of Girls Inc. of Alameda County.

Elementary aged girls will have the opportunity to plant flowers or herbs in small pots, which they can use to beautify their classroom, school, home, or neighborhood.  Included within the pots holding herbs will be healthy recipes that call for that specific herb.

September 11, 2009  will mark the first milestone in the United We Serve initiative, President Obama’s nationwide initiative to create a sustained, collaborative, and focused effort to meet community needs.  The day will be an opportunity for all Americans to recommit to volunteering throughout the year.

United We Serve is President Obama’s national call to service challenging all Americans to engage in sustained, collaborative, and focused service in their communities.  United We Serve is being led by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that improves lives and strengthens communities though volunteering and service.
