Stepping Outside

When girls are given the opportunity to have new experiences beyond their immediate communities, we challenge them to step outside of the familiar, beyond their comfort zones, to try on new roles and explore their capacities, enabling them to see themselves as being more than who they imagine themselves to be.  This past December 6th and 7th grade All STARS participants from Roots International Academy and CCPA had just this opportunity.

Eileen Fisher Inc. gives back…again.

A big thank you to Eileen Fisher Inc. from everyone at Girls Inc. for the company’s continued support. A special fundraiser, The Eileen Fisher 2009 Give Back event, with 10% of proceeds going to Girls Inc of Alameda County, raised almost $1000 for the agency. Snacks and champagne was served to customers on Friday, November 20, 2009, from 4 -8 pm, for the second year in a row, in support of Girls Inc.  Read more »

Here at Girls Inc its clear that we value our girls and show this through our level of commitment to the work we do. It is always fulfilling to meet others who believe in our mission and want to be a part of such inspiration. Over the years our volunteers have grown immensely and come with a high level of expertise in various fields. Working for Girls Incorporated of Alameda County, I’ve grown accustomed to questions about our mission and our work. While most people are supportive, I do occasionally get asked, “Why just girls? Especially in the communities you serve, do you think that girls need help more than boys?” My answer always is “No, girls don’t need more. They need different support.”  Read more »

Fitness and Body Image for Girls

Unfortunately, mixed messages are even received from respected fitness and health magazines. Flipping through a fitness magazine recently I came across the all too common, yet still disturbing, ad depicting two women in
bikinis with “perfect” bodies.

I immediately thought of the girls in my Girls Inc. Bodies in Motion program who, before joining my program, searched for resources to help them get fit and lead healthier lives.  Read more »
