Parker Elementary GIRLStart Update
This year at Parker GIRLStart, we are introducing B.E.A.R (Be
Excited About Reading!) time. We want to make reading a cozy and
comfortable experience for the girls by providing some stuffed
bears they can use as reading buddies. We greatly appreciate donations
of clean, gently used stuffed teddy bears.

Notable Women Honored at 2007 Strong,
Smart and Bold Breakfast
Girls
Inc.'s annual breakfast honoring outstanding women leaders in
Alameda County, held Thursday, April 5, 2007, was a great success.
Over 250 community leaders turned out to show support to Girls
Inc. and see honorees United States Senator Barbara Boxer, Ophelia
Basgal, Vice President for Civic Partnerships and Community Initiatives
PG&E and Linda V. Deboe, Director of Customer Relations Wells
Fargo receive the 2007 Strong, Smart and Bold awards.
United States Senator Barbara Boxer surprised Girls Incorporated
by presenting Executive Director Pat Loomes with her Excellence
In Education Award. Senator Boxer established this award to recognize
teachers, parents, businesses and organizations that are working
to make positive changes in education.

New Study Finds Teenage Girls Facing
Increased Pressure:
The
women's movement has broken down many gender stereotypes. But
according to a new Girls Inc. national study, girls still face
societal pressure to be pretty, passive and pursue traditional
"women's jobs." At the same time, they are also
increasingly expected to do well in school and go to college,
