Girls Inc. of Alameda County’s mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. Since our founding in 1958, our programs have supported the unique needs of girls. In the 1990s, we began to design and deliver programs focusing on girls within San Francisco Bay Area communities that have the least access to opportunity. Through a transitional kindergarten through early career Program Continuum, we empower youth by equipping them with the resources, skills, and access needed to build confidence, visualize and pursue their dreams, and grow into healthy, educated, and independent adults. All programs are developmentally appropriate, supporting the changing needs of youth as they grow. From literacy interventions in elementary school and exciting hands-on STEAM projects in middle school to building leadership skills, taking on paid internships, and college readiness in high school, and college persistence and early career supports, including workforce development, Girls Inc. provides the support and opportunities young people need to thrive at no cost to participants and their families.

Girls Inc. of Alameda County delivers daily after-school programming in 1) 12 schools and 2) our downtown Oakland center where girls from more than 15 middle schools and 45 high schools converge. As well we deliver summer programming in two Oakland locations as well as Hayward, and an earn-and-learn workforce development program for young adults who earn wages with Girls Inc. and receive free college courses towards their AA degree. In all, Girls Inc. of Alameda County provided robust programming to nearly 1750 youth in 2023-24.

About the Role

College & Career Readiness Program Leader is a part-time role designed to support 11th and 12th grade scholars in successfully graduating high school, exploring career paths and college majors, applying to colleges and scholarships, and preparing for the college experience.

The Program Leader facilitates engaging, interactive workshops that focus on:

• Developing cognitive and non-cognitive skills needed to thrive in college

• Building key academic content knowledge

• Strengthening self-management and personal development skills

• Increasing awareness and knowledge about post-secondary education options

As a member of the Project Accelerate team, the College & Career Readiness Program Leader may also support alumnae programming and events as needed.

Schedule & Commitment:

The Program Leader will facilitate programming four days per week, serving four cohorts of 15–20 girls each week. Programming may take place at multiple sites and will be delivered in person and/or virtually. Candidates must be able to commit to the academic school year.

Job Summary

• Facilitate, in person and/or virtually, weekly school year workshops for high school girls and gender expansive youth.

• Develop and maintain relationships with girls and gender expansive youth by demonstrating compassion, respect, and high expectations while assisting them in determining their interests and passions and how that can relate to college and career opportunities.

• Support and monitor development of college readiness skills for high school scholars that will enable their success at high school graduation and in post-secondary education.

• Participate as part of the Project Accelerate team and provide support to Alumnae and Alumnae activities/events as needed.

• Review high school schedules/classes to determine if they meet high school graduation and college entry requirements and set a course of action to ensure the program participant meets academic requirements for college entry.

• Review grades and work with school counselors/teachers as needed to determine if scholars meet HS A-G requirements and college GPA requirements and determine course of action including referring to appropriate support services and resources.

• Set goals with scholars and action plans around their goals.

• Assist in engaging and providing information to parents in planning for scholars’ college experience.

• Assist with the implementation of college prep workshops for participants and parents to build on self-management strategies, harm reduction strategies, and knowledge of post-secondary education, and college readiness for parents.

• Assist with field trips, SAT prep classes, and creative writing workshops.

• Assist with the planning and coordination for sisterhood events.

• Work as a positive team member of Community Programs and participate in mandatory weekly individual supervision, staff development, consultation, training, department and team meetings.

• Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed for events.

• Perform other duties as needed or assigned.

About You

• Commitment to work the academic school year.

• Ability to work 1:00-7:00pm M-TH; 10am-2pm Fri as well as some evenings and weekends as needed for events/field trips.

• Bachelor or Associate Degree preferred but not required

• Ability to work remotely and facilitate programming virtually as needed.

• Experience working with and/or volunteering with high school aged youth and families representing diverse cultures, ethnicities, abilities, and sexual orientation.

• Group facilitation, behavioral management and conflict resolution skills gained in working with adolescent youth.

• Ability work cross-culturally with co-workers, youth, parents, community partners, volunteers, and interns

• Ability to create and maintain a culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and safe space for girls to experience during programming.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Knowledge of equity issues affecting participants especially around educational equity and access.

• Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed for events.

• Bilingual (English/Spanish/Cantonese) is a plus

• Collaborative, resourceful, self-motivating, creative, organized, and flexible.

• Knowledge of MS Word, Canva, Excel, Outlook, Zoom

• Ability to bend, lift, and move up to 15 lbs.

• Background clearance from the Department of Justice
